Maryland World War II Memorial

The Maryland World War II Memorial is a memorial to the men and women who served their country during World War II.  It is located at 1920 Governor Ritchie Hwy, Annapolis, MD 21409. The state was home to many military bases, camps, and detachments during the war. Many of these facilities were still in operation when the memorial was built. They included the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Andrews Air Force Base, Ft. Detrick, and Patuxent Naval Air Station. The state also housed the U.S. Coast Guard Yard, Naval World Wide Radio Station, and the Naval Academy.

The new memorial was designed by Secundino Fernandez and was the result of a world-wide design competition. It is located on Route 450 at the Naval Academy Bridge and features an open four-sided amphitheater with 20 granite stones that represent historical events that occurred in Maryland during the war. This memorial will provide you with a unique perspective on the war and its impact on the United States.

In addition to the memorial building, the State of Maryland has a separate monument honoring the fallen soldiers. The War Memorial Building is not only a memorial for the fallen, but also a headquarters for various veteran organizations. The building is a Baltimore City landmark and a National Register Historic District. It is also a venue for civic and veteran groups to hold their meetings.

The Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs offers burial services for veterans and their dependents. Maryland has one of the largest veteran burial programs in the country. It also manages three veteran memorials. In Annapolis, it oversees the Maryland World War II Memorial and the Maryland Vietnam War Memorial. The Department also shares responsibility for the War Memorial Building in Baltimore. Browse around this site
